Weekly Reflection from Lily

Dear Mrs. Harrison,

I have shown that I am leader this week in some ways.  The first one is by me putting first things first and turning my homework in on time.

My thoughts on addition to the millions are great because my teacher, Mrs. Harrison, makes math SUPER easy!

I've learned a lot about tall tales.  First I learned how Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman) helped plant apple trees all over the western part of the USA.  Paul Bunyon's story was REALLY CRAZY!  The author talked all about how loud, strong, fast, and big he was!  I learned Paul Bunyon helped people by going place to place and by how he was pretty alert.

Readers are Leaders

WARNING!!!

***Cuteness Overload***

I am not sure what it cuter...the kindergartners or the leaders!!!  Our class has joined forces with a kindergarten class for reading buddies.  The littles visit us every Thursday afternoon for extra reading time.  The 4th graders are showing wonderful leadership.  They not only choose good fit kindergarten books, but they also pretend to be the teacher!  They talk to the k's about vocabulary and story elements, retell the story from beginning to middle to end, and make predictions throughout the story.  It is so fun to watch them interact together.  We cannot wait to see the progress the k's will make by the end of the year!

Weekly Letter from Mrs. Harrison

Dear kiddos,

Thanks for another great week at NPES!  It’s been another busy week with Grandparents Breakfast and the Book Fair.  It is funny how life changes!  I have always bought new books at the book fair for my classroom, but this year I decided we had plenty of books for the time being.  So instead I bought Jay and Eva new books…because you know they do not have any books at our house, right?!?!  HA!  I hope you spent your money wisely at the book fair and bought something challenging!

We have also worked hard on our Friday Morning Assembly performance.  Thank you for being willing to step up and have fun doing it.  Speaking of stepping up, how have you shown you are a leader at NP this week?

This week you worked on addition of numbers to the millions as well as multi-step story problems.  I am so proud of your effort on the multi-step problems!  You really showed growth mindset because you didn’t give up on the extremely difficult problems.  How do you feel about addition to the millions?  What would make the process easier for you?

Ms. Elder focused on a fall theme, tall tales, and figurative language with Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyon.  Tell me what you learned about tall tales.  Give an example to help me understand!    

Thanks again for another great week!  Next week will be our last week with Ms. Elder, and we head to Frankfort on Friday!  Make sure you rest up for next week over the weekend!

Energy of Rolling

We have been discussing all things force and motion in science.  Today the students were able to put their knowledge to good use!  We completed the Energy of Rolling activity in small groups.  Students were given marbles, books, rulers, and half a cup to test their knowledge.  I cannot wait to discuss their results!    

Mathematicians!

These kiddos are really starting to ROCK on the 4th grade math standards using the Eureka program. The students have reviewed and learned many concepts at a higher level.  Some of the concepts include:  place value, comparing, rounding, addition, and subtraction.  Speaking of place value, 4th graders work with numbers to the MILLIONS place!!!  

New Year! New Routine!

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!  I am excited to spend my days with each of my 20 students.  As with every year, I always attempt to try new things.  Even though my classroom blog is not "new", I am attempting (and excited) to get it updated.

I plan to blog and add pictures.  I would love to tell you to look for weekly updates, but I'm not going to hold myself to because I might just forget, get too busy, or be too tired one week...honestly is the best policy!  I sure don't want to let anyone down :)

However, I have created a new classroom job.  We will have a photographer/blogger.  The person selected for this job each month will be responsible for taking pictures of the exciting things we have going on in our classroom, and I hope this person will blog their weekly reflection on Fridays!

Reading Buddies

What do you get when you take a class of third graders and a class of kindergartners and pair them up???  READING BUDDIES!!!  Ms. Stanley and Mrs. Harrison's classes have joined forces again this year to increase our love of reading :)  Check out these pictures from our first meeting...
