Mrs. Harrison Weekly Letter

January 13, 2016
Dear Students,
Yeah…five full days of school!  Give yourself a BIG pat on the back if you had 100% attendance this week!  This is the time of year when all kinds of germs are passed – strep, flu, and stomach bug.  I hope all of us can avoid those nasty illnesses!  I’m sad to report our class attendance didn’t meet our goal of 97.2%.  We only had 96.1% attendance this week L  What will you do to strive for 100% attendance next week?  Remember those students with 100% attendance are in the running for a $10 Dominos pizza gift card!!!
I am excited to announce a new reading incentive that will start next week.  Although our class is amazing with our reading logs, not every class at NP can say the same thing L  Here’s the incentive…each week you read your 100 minutes, you place your name in the 4th grade box.  You will have 9 opportunities to place your name in the box.  At the end of 9 weeks, ONE fourth grader will be drawn from the box to receive a $20 gift card to Books-A-Million Book Store J  Have you ever been to BAM?  What did you do while you were there?  Did you purchase anything?  If not, what would you purchase if you received the $20 gift card?
We finished fluency checks this week!  Fluency is the ability to read at an appropriate pace with few to no errors.  It is important to read fluently because the literature and information you read will continue to get more difficult in each grade level.    How do you feel about your fluency?  What do you need to do to improve your fluency or to continue growing through the rest of fourth grade?
Our math topic is still fractions.  This week we learned about equivalent fractions – creating them with tape diagrams and area models as well as writing addition and multiplication sentences.  How do you feel about fractions?  Are you understanding the lessons or are you lost in the lessons?
Our behavior was a little off this week…partly because we are stuck inside due to weather, partly because of changes in weather, and partly because we didn’t always choose to be proactive this week.  What will you do next week to show you are a leader at NP?
Let’s end this letter on a positive note.  What is something you are super proud of yourself for this week?  It could be something you did at school or out of school.  It could be something that you were recognized for or it could be something no one saw!
         Enjoy your three-day weekend!
                                                                                                            Love,
                                                                                                   Mrs. Harrison

Dear Kiddos,
Well I declare this has been the CrAzIeSt week, but it sure flew by quickly.  We were out of school Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.  I sure am thankful for all the men and women who have fought for the rights of ALL Americans!  My life would be very different without people like MLK, Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, and Abraham Lincoln!  How would your life be different without those mentioned?
My family went to see Sing at the movies on Monday, and we all thought it was fabulous!  What did you do on your day off?
Then we returned with a Bluegrass band to start our day on Tuesday.  They shared lots of information with us and played some pretty cool songs.  What is your favorite type of music?  I don’t have a favorite type of music, but my favorite groups are the Dixie Chicks and Dave Matthews.
On Wednesday and Thursday we completed MAP testing for reading and math.  You all worked super hard, and I am proud of your effort!  Lots of your met your goals, and many of you were soooooooo close to meeting goals.  We still have a LOT to do this semester, but I feel good about our learning so far this year.  How do you feel about yourself as a learner?  Are you being proactive and working hard every day?  If not, what is your plan to improve?  It’s never too late to begin with the end in mind and set goals for yourself to improve!
Then it was Friday!  We started the morning with a fraction quiz.  How do you feel about fractions so far?
Today is also an important day in America because our new president, Donald Trump, will be inaugurated.  Don’t forget you will have an opportunity to go to Washington D.C. when you are a senior at Owensboro High School.  There is a group of OHS students in Washington D.C., and they will have the privilege of attending a presidential inauguration today!
When you start raising money to attend the trip, make sure to come back and see me!  I will be happy to help you make the opportunity happen!  You can babysit my kids, mow my lawn, do the laundry or dishes…just kidding J  You will have worked hard enough for me in 4th grade
In two hours we start another weekend; and when we return Monday, it will be the last week of January!  Where does time go?  Hope you have a fantastic weekend.  Come back next week with 100% attendance…who knows what I might have up my sleeve if you are ALL here EVERYDAY next week J
                                                                                                                    Sincerely,

Dear Students,
Overall, we had an AMAZING week…until we returned from Friday morning assembly L  I won’t harp on FMA anymore because I know you will make better decisions in the future!  You are such amazing students, leaders, children!  Show it…all the time…even when no one is watching…BE A LEADER!  So tell me how you show leadership at NPES?  It can be something extraordinary you have done this week, or it can be something ordinary you have done this week and you’re not sure I noticed it!
Be more like Martin Luther King, Jr., who we talked about this week in reading!  You brought schema to the discussion, but your schema has grown tremendously.  What is one new fact you learned about MLK?
Speaking of schema, I know several of you are ready to start on your wax museum project!  I love that you are beginning with the end in mind!  It makes my teacher heart smile J  We have about another week of instruction before I set you free to begin your project.  Be thinking about an important person in history you want to expand your schema on.  You will be the EXPERT on this historical figure, and we will all be learning from you!  If you already have an idea of who you want to be, tell me WHO and WHY you want to be that person!
We are moving along in fractions, and I still feel really good about our learning!  You took another fraction quiz this morning.  Tell me how you feel about fractions, and how you think you did on your quiz!
Next week we will be focusing on leadership because NPES Leadership Day is next Friday.  You will all have a part in leadership day because we will have the open 4th grade classroom!  We will be showing off all the cool things we do in here.  What is your favorite activity we do in here?  It can be a daily, weekly, or monthly activity.
Thanks for working hard this week!  We only had ONE day with students below white…that is out-of-this-world!!!  Our attendance was INCREDIBLE this week…99% J  Let’s keep up the good work into next week!  Have a fabulous weekend!!!
 Sincerely,

Mrs. Harrison Weekly Letter

January 6, 2017
Dear Students,
Welcome back to 2017!    What an exciting week we have already had…including a SNOW DAY!   Hope you enjoyed the first four days getting back into our routine.  It’s always hard to get going the first morning, but then it seems to become a habit again!  What is your favorite part of our daily routine?
We talked about resolutions this week.  It is not necessarily hard to make a resolution, but it is usually difficult to keep a resolution unless you begin with the end in mind.  What is your new year’s resolution and what is your plan to keep it?
The second semester is so exciting for fourth graders.  You will have many special activities including a trip to UK and the Kentucky Horse Park, field day, electricity day, Derby day, Pineapple Ball, the all new Bike Rally, and 4th grade graduation.  Of course we also have end of the year KPREP, MAP, fluency, and DRA testing.  It is really important to begin with the end in mind this semester so you can participate in all the fun events!  What are you most looking forward to in your final semester at NP?
Thanks for a great return to school!  Hopefully we will have a full five days next week J
                           Sincerely,

Mrs. Harrison
